The honest answer to “how much do solar panels cost in the UK?” is: it depends on the size of your system, your roof, your location, and what you’re including. But you don’t have to be vague — by 2026 the UK solar market is mature enough that we can give you real, defensible numbers.

This guide walks through current 2026 solar panel pricing for UK homes, with Sussex-specific figures from systems we’ve installed across the county. We also cover the hidden bits (scaffolding, electrical upgrades, MCS registration) and what changes the bottom line.

What a solar panel system costs in the UK in 2026

Solar panel installations in the UK have been VAT exempt since April 2022, and that relief has been confirmed through to 2027. That alone has knocked roughly £1,200–£1,800 off a typical 4kW install compared to pre-2022 prices.

Here are 2026 guide prices for the most common residential system sizes, fully installed:

What’s actually in the price?

A solar panel quote should itemise the following. If your quote is just a single number, ask for the breakdown:

  • Panels — 8 to 16+ panels at roughly £150–£300 each depending on output and brand (JA Solar, Longi, Trina, REC and others all play in the residential UK market)
  • Inverter — the box that converts DC from the panels to AC for your home. £600–£1,500 depending on size and brand (SolarEdge, GivEnergy, Solis, Growatt)
  • Mounting hardware — rails, hooks, clamps. £200–£500 typically
  • Scaffolding — £400–£800 for a standard semi-detached
  • Electrical installation — labour, consumer unit work, RCD/breaker, cabling. £600–£1,200
  • MCS registration and commissioning — £200–£400 (this is what makes you eligible for Smart Export Guarantee payments)
  • Optional: bird mesh / pigeon proofing — £200–£500 if there are local pigeon issues

Does Sussex pricing differ from the rest of the UK?

Pricing across the south of England is broadly consistent, but a few Sussex-specific factors push the value higher even when the install cost itself is similar:

  • Higher solar yieldsBognor Regis routinely tops UK sunshine records at 1,900+ hours per year. Most of the West Sussex coast is well above the UK average. That means more kWh per kW of panel and faster payback than most of the UK.
  • Coastal exposure — for seafront properties in Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, Brighton, and Hastings you may need marine-grade fittings. We include them at no extra cost; some installers don’t.
  • Heritage planning — conservation areas in Lewes, Chichester, Rye and on Shoreham Beach can add planning consultancy time. Usually no extra cost from us but worth knowing.

How much do solar panels save per year?

Savings depend on location and on how much of the energy you use vs export. A typical Sussex household with a 4kW system saves:

  • Coastal West Sussex (Bognor, Littlehampton) — 5 to 7 years payback. Then 18–25 years of essentially free electricity from panels with a 25–30+ year working life.
  • South coast (Worthing, Shoreham, Brighton, Eastbourne) — 6 to 8 years payback.
  • Inland Sussex (Chichester, Lewes, Hastings, Battle) — 6 to 8 years.
  • Northern Sussex (Horsham, Crawley, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath) — 7 to 9 years.

Add a battery and the payback typically extends to 7–11 years, but lifetime returns are higher and you’re more independent from grid price spikes.

What pushes the price up?

If you’re getting quoted significantly more than the ranges above, here are the legitimate reasons:

  • Premium panels — Tesla, REC Alpha, SunPower etc. can add £500–£1,500. Worth it for some homeowners but not for most.

  • EV charger — £800–£1,200 for a smart EV charger installed at the same time.
  • Complex roofs — multi-pitch, in-roof integrated panels, tile types that need specialist hooks, very tall properties needing larger scaffolding.
  • Consumer unit upgrades — if your existing fuse board can’t take the solar circuit, you may need a new one (~£500–£900).
  • Bird-proofing — pigeons under panels are a real issue in some Sussex towns. Mesh adds £200–£500.

What about finance?

Solar finance has matured a lot. A few options homeowners typically consider:

  • Cash purchase — best returns. 0% VAT means the headline price is genuinely the price.
  • Solar finance / personal loan — typical 5–7 year terms. The monthly repayment is often close to or below what you save on electricity, so the system is cash-positive from day one.
  • Mortgage extension / further advance — cheapest finance if your mortgage rate is low, but adds the cost to your overall mortgage term.
  • Council Solar Together schemes — group-buying via Chichester District Council and Horsham District Council brings the unit price down through bulk procurement.
