Solar PV and EV Charger - East Sussex

Project Overview:

This homeowner wanted to take a major step towards energy independence by reducing their reliance on both gas and the electricity grid.

With the long-term goal of creating a lower-carbon, lower-running-cost home, they chose to install solar PV and battery storage, allowing them to generate and store their own electricity for use throughout the day and into the evening.

To support the move away from gas completely, our parent company A Greener Alternative also installed an air source heat pump, helping the property transition to a modern, efficient heating system powered by electricity.

The Challenge: Reducing Gas Use and Grid Dependence

Like many households, this customer’s energy use was split across:

  • Gas for heating and hot water.
  • Electricity for household appliances and lighting.

Their goal was to bring everything under one cleaner, more efficient system, but without increasing electricity costs or becoming overly dependent on the grid.

Our Solution: Solar PV + Battery Storage

We designed and installed a solar PV system paired with battery storage, allowing the homeowner to make the most of the electricity generated on-site.

This setup means:

  • Solar power can be used in real time during the day.
  • Excess generation is stored in the battery rather than exported.
  • Stored energy can then be used in the evening and overnight.

Battery storage plays a huge role in reducing grid reliance, helping the customer maximise self-consumption and take control of when and how their electricity is used.

Supporting the Move Away from Gas

To complete the customer’s transition away from gas, A Greener Alternative installed an air source heat pump at the property.

Heat pumps are highly efficient and use electricity rather than gas and when paired with solar and battery storage, they become even more cost-effective.

This combination helps the homeowner:

  • Reduce fossil fuel use significantly.
  • Lower heating-related running costs.
  • Move towards a fully electric home powered largely by renewable energy.
